If the area of the triangle with vertices (1, 2), (2, 3) and (x, 4) is 40 sq. units then the value of |x — 3| is:

Solution:

Area of triangle

=\;{1}/{2}|\table 1-2 , 2-x ; 2-3 , 3-4|=40

=|\table -1 , 2-x ; -1 , -1|=80

⇒ |1 + 2 –x| = 80

⇒|x-3|=80
