(a) Total number of students qualifying the test = 100 = 260
Let number of girls = x
and number of boys = (400 - x)
Now, cut off cleared by girls = $\frac{\mathit{x}\times 80}{100}=\frac{4}{5}\mathit{x}$
and cut off cleared by boys
$\frac{\left(400-\mathit{x}\right)\times 60}{100}$ = $\frac{1200-3\mathit{x}}{5}$
Now, $\frac{4}{5}\mathit{x}+\frac{1200-3\mathit{x}}{5}$ = 260
⇒ $\frac{4\mathit{x}+1200-3\mathit{x}}{5}$ = 260
⇒ x + 1200 = 1300
⇒ x = 1300 - 1200 = 100
∴ x = 100
Hence, one hundred girls appeared in the test.
