A boat which sails at 10 kmph in still water starts chasing in upstream direction, from 10 km behind, another one which can sail at 4 kmph in the upstream direction. After how many hours will it catch it if the stream is flowing at 2 kmph.

Solution:

(3) Rate upstream of boat that chases = 10 – 2 = 8 kmph
Its relative speed = (8 – 4) kmph
= 4 kmph
∴

\Required \time = \Distance/ {\Relative \speed}

= 10/ 4 = 2.5
