In a recent study, it was found that Mumbai has three times as many cars as in Kolkata. The number of cars in Kolkata and Mumbai taken together is two time the number of cars in Chennai. What is the ratio of number of cars in Chennai to the number of cars in Kolkata?

Solution:

(d) Let the number of cars in Mumbai, Kolkata andChennai be

\M_c, \K_c and \C_c

respectively.
Then,

\M_c/\K_c

3/1\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;.....(i)

And ,

{\M_c+K_c}/\C_c = 2/1 \;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\; .......(ii)

Let

\M_c

and

\K_c

be 3x and x.
Using the values of

\M_c and \K_c

We get ,

{3x +x}/\C_c = 2/1

⇒

{4x}/\C_c= 2/1

⇒

\C_c = 2x

\C_c/\K_c = {2\x}/\x

= 2 : 1
