Temperate cyclones move from the west to the east direction under the influence of westerly winds, while tropical cyclones move from the east to the west direction under the influence of trade winds. The temperate cyclones are associated with mild and overcast weather at the initial stage and followed by moderate to heavy rainfall for a long period of time in a larger area. The tropical cyclones are associated with heavy rainfall and high velocity of winds for short duration at a small area.
