(x+y)^{2}=x^{2}+y^{2}+2 x y

(8)^{2}=x^{2}+y^{2}+2.\;12

x^{2}+y^{2}=64-24=40

(x-y)^{2}=x^{2}+y^{2}-2 x y

(x-y)^{2}=40-2×12=16

∴ x-y=4
