A rectangle has twice the area of a square. The length of the rectangle is 8 cm greater than the side of the square and breadth of it is equal to the side of the square. Then the perimeter of the rectangle (in cm) is

Solution:

Let the side of the square be x cm
Length of the rectangle = x + 8
Breadth of the rectangle = x

∴2x^2=(x+8)x

⇒2x^2=x^2+8x⇒x=8

Perimeter of rectangle

=2[(x+8)+x]=4x+16

=4×8+16=48

From the figure it is clear that

x^2=8x

⇒x=8

∴P=2(16+8)=48cm
