Speed = 45 km/hr
Time = $\frac{\mathrm{Distance}}{\mathrm{Speed}}$
y = $\frac{\mathit{d}}{45}$
⇒ d = 45 y ... (i)
Speed of the return journey = 40 km/hr
Distance = d
Time = (y + 1) hrs
So, y + 1 = $\frac{\mathit{d}}{40}$
d = 40y + 40 ......(ii)
Equating equations (i) and (ii) we get,
45y = 40y + 40
5y = 40
y = 8 hrs.
So, distance d = 45 × 8 = 360 kms
