Two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 5. If 9 is subtracted from each number, then they are in the ratio of 12 : 23. What is the second number?

Solution:

Let two numbers are 3x and 5x.
According to the question,

{3x-}/{5x-9}

{12}/{23}

⇒ 69x – 207 = 60x – 108
69x – 60x = 207 – 108
⇒ 9x = 99
∴ x = 11
∴ Second number = 5 × 11 = 55
