(2) The Champaran Satyagrahaof 1917 was Gandhi’s firstmovement in India. He took upthe cause of hapless indigopeasants under the ‘Tinkathiasystem’ and waged satyagrahaagainst the European indigoplanters. Under this system,the peasants were bound toplant 3 out of 20 parts of hisland with indigo for his landlord.The movement was verysuccessful.
