Water hammering : when a fluid is flowing in a pipe and valve is open completely. If now the valve is suddenly closed than a high pressure wave developed in the pipe setup, this high pressure wave create a noise known as knocking also this wave of high pressure has the effect of hammering action on the walls of the pipe and hence it is also known as water hammer.
