Rainfall of intensity 20 mm/h occurred over a watershed of area 1 km

for duration of six hours. It measures a direct runoff for a volume of 30,000 m

in the stream. Find the precipitation NOT available for runoff in this case?

Solution:

Total Rainfall = 20 mm/h × 6
= 120 mm = 12 cm.
Run off = Volume of Run off / Area
Run off =

30000/10^6 = 0.03m = 3cm

So, Precipitation = Rainfall – Runoff
= 12cm – 3cm = 9cm.
