If sin x + sin y = 0, 0°< x ≤90° and 0° ≤y ≤90°, then find cos x + cos y.

Solution:

(1) sin x + sin y = 0

⇒x = y = 0°

[If the sum of two positive numbersis 0, then both the numbers are 0;so, sin x=0 sin y=0.]

∴cos x + cos y = cos0°+ cos0°= 1+ 1 = 2
