Find the co-ordinates of the point which divides the line segment joining the points (4, -1 ) and (-2,4) internally in the ratio 3 :5

Solution:

Here

x_1= 4 , x_ 2 = -2 , y _1= -1, y _2 = 4

and

m_1 =3

and

m_ 2 = 5

∴

x={m _1x _2 + m_ 2x_1} /{m_1+m_2}

={3 (-2) + 5(4) }/{3+5}=7/4

and

y={m _1y _2 + m_ 2y_1} /{m_1+m_2}

={ 3(4) + 5 (-1) }/{3+5}=7/8

∴ The required point is

(7/4,7/8)
