Solution:

Given : DE is parallel to BC
In ∆ABC and ∆ADE,
∠ABC = ∠ADE (corresponding angles)
∠ACB = ∠AED (corresponding angles)
Thus, ∠ABC ∼ ∠ADE
∴

{ AB} /{AD}={AC}/ {AE}

Using componendo and dividendo, we have =

{AD }/{DB } ={AE}/{EC }
