Makhsudabad later popularly known as Murshidabad, was founded by Mughal emperor Akbar in 16th century. Following Aurangzeb's orders, the Nawab (ruler) Murshid Qul Khan relocated the capital from Dacca (now Dhaka, Bangladesh) and renamed the town Murshidabad. It remained the British capital until 1790, and it is still the seat of the notable descendants of Bengal's nawabs.
