Solution:

Let the two numbers be

x

and

y

respectively.

∴

Given,

x+y=59

and

x y=1150

We know that,

(x+y)^{2} \;\; =x^{2}+y^{2}+2 x y

∴ \;\; x^{2}+y^{2} \;\; =(x+y)^{2}-2 x y

\;\; =(59)^{2}-2 × 1150

∴ \;\; x^{2}+y^{2} \;\; =3481-2300=1181
