Point P is the midpoint of segment AB. Co-ordinates of P are (3,1) and B are (5, - 4). What are the co-ordinates of point A ?

Solution:

Let co-ordinates of point A = (x ,y )
Co-ordinates of mid-point

=({x_1+x_2}/2,{y_1+y_2}/2)

⇒

{x + 5}/2=3\;\;∴ x=6-5=1

and

{y-4}/2=1\;\; ∴Y=2+4=6

∴ Co-ordinates o f point A = (x, y )
= (1, 6)
