Three squares are made on the three sides of a right angled triangle. The ratio of the sides other than the hypotenuse is 5 : 12. What will be the ratio of the area of the largest square to the smallest square?

Solution:

(3) The two sides are 5x and 12x.
Then the hypotenuse =

√{(5 x)^{2}+(12 x)^{2}}=√{169 x^{2}}=13 x

The largest square will be made by taking 13x as its side while the smallest will be made by taking 5x as its side. Ratio of areas of the largest square to the smallest square =

{(13 x)^{2}}/{(5 x)^{2}}= {169}/{25}=169 : 25
