The sum of the squares of two consecutive natural numbers in 421. Find the product of the numbers.

Solution:

Let the required natural number be

x

and

(x+1)

. then

x^{2}+(x+1)^{2}=421

⇒ x^{2}+x^{2}+1+2 x=421

⇒ x^{2}+x-210=0

⇒(x+15)(x-14)=0

⇒ x=-15, x=14

But -15 is not a natural number.
∴ required number are 14 and

15.

Required product

=14 × 15=210
