The population of a town is 15000. I f the number of males increases by 8% and that of females by 10%, then the population would increase to 16300. Find the number of females in the town.

Solution:

I f number of females = a
then number of males = 15000 – a

∴a×10/100+(15000-a)×8/100

= 16300 -15000
10a + 120000 – 8a = 130000
2a = 130000 – 120000
2a = 10000
a = 5000
