A cask contains a mixture of 49 litres of honey and water in the proportion 5:2. How much water must be added to it so that ratio of honey to water may be 7:4.

Validate

Solution:

(2) Let the amount of honey and water are 5x and 2x respectively.
∴ 5x + 2x = 49
⇒ 7x = 49 ⇒ x = 7
∴ honey = 5 × 7 = 35l
water = 2 × 7 = 14l
Let yl water has to be added.
So,

35/{14+Y}=7/4

⇒14 + y = 20 ∴ y = 6
