(1) Muscles of the alimentary canal contract and expand to push food forward. This movement is called peristalsis. So, the food moves forward due to peristalsis. Fluid material makes this movement  easier, gravitational pull is everywhere but here the main reason is peristalsis only. Tongue cannot provide such a force. It only helps push the food down to pharynx.
