from it, how many metre of cloth will still be left in the original piece?

Solution:

Total length of cloth

=68 {3}/{4} {m}={275}/{4} {m}

Length of the piece to be cut

=3 {1}/{2} {m}

={7}/{2} { m}

\∴

Maximum number of pieces that can be cut

={275}/{4}÷{{7}/{2}}={275}/{4} \×{2}/{7}=19.643

Number of portion cut off

=19

Remaining portion

=(19.643-19)×{7}/{2}

=2.25=2 {1}/{4} { m}
