According to the question
x × y = 72 ...(i)
⇒ y = $\frac{72}{\mathit{x}}$
Now, (x – 3) (y + 4) = 72
⇒ xy + 4x – 3y – 12 = 72 ...(ii)
From (i) and (ii)
xy = xy + 4x – 3y – 12
⇒ 4x – 3y = 12
⇒ 4x - 3 $\left(\frac{72}{\mathit{x}}\right)$ = 12
⇒ 4${\mathit{x}}^2$ – 216 = 12x
⇒ 4${\mathit{x}}^2$ – 12x – 216 = 0
⇒ ${\mathit{x}}^2$ – 3x – 54 = 0
⇒ ${\mathit{x}}^2$ – 9x + 6x – 54 = 0
⇒ x(x – 9) + 6(x – 9) = 0
⇒ (x – 9) (x + 6) = 0
either x = 9 or x = – 6 (not possible)
∴ Required no. of people = 9
