Two numbers are in the ratio 6 : 7. If 4 is subtracted from each, the new numbers are in the ratio 40 : 47. Find the difference between the two numbers.

Validate

Solution:

Let the numbers be 6x and 7x.
Then,

{6x-4}/{7x-4}=40/47

47(6x - 4) = 40(7x - 4)
282x - 188 = 280x - 160
2x = 28
x = 14
So, the numbers are 6x = 6 × 14 = 84 - 7x = 7 × 14 = 98
∴ Difference between the two numbers is 14
