In a bag, there are some pens and pencils in the ratio 5 : 18. If 7 pens are taken out from the bag, then the ratio becomes 2 : 9. Find the number of pencils.

Validate

Solution:

Let the number of pens and pencils be 5x and 18x respectively.
So,

{5x-7}/{18x}=2/9

45x - 63 = 36x
9x = 63
x = 7
Number of pencils in the bag = 18x = 18 × 7 = 126
