The product of two consecutive odd numbers is 1763. What is the larger number?

Solution:

Let the two consecutive odd numbers be (x + 1) and (x + 3);
Then,

(x + 1) (x + 3) = 1763

⇒ x^2 + 4x + 3 = 1763

⇒ x^2 + 4x - 1760 = 0

⇒(x + 44) (x - 40) = 0

Hence,

x = 40

∴ Larger number

= 40 + 3 = 43
