The sum of squares of two numbers is 80 and square of difference between the two numbers is 36. What is the product of two numbers?

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then

x^2 + y^2 = 80

...(i)

(x - y)^2 = 36

...(ii)
Now,

(x - y)^2 = x^2 + y^2 - 2xy

⇒ 36 = 80 - 2xy

⇒ 2xy = 44 ⇒ xy = 22
