Two numbers are such that their sum is 16 and their product is 55. What is the sum of their reciprocals?

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then
x + y = 16 ...(i)
xy = 55 ...(ii)
Hence,

{x+y}/{xy}=16/55

∴1/x+1/y=16/55
