What is the greater of the two numbers whose product is 640, if the sum of the two numbers exceeds their difference by 32?

Solution:

Let the two numbers be x and y; then
xy = 640 ...(i)
Also,

(x+y)-(x-y)=32

⇒2y=32⇒y=16

From equation (i),

x=640/y=640/16=40
