A and B enter into partnership with capitals as 5 : 6. At the end of 8 months A withdraws. If they receive profit in the ratio of 5 : 9, find how long B's capital was used?

Solution:

Let the B's capital was used for x months; then
Ratio of their capitals = (5 × 8) : (6 × x) = 20 : 3x
Now,

20/ {3x}= 5/ 9

∴ x = {20 ×9}/ {5× 3}

= 12 months
