Find the sum of the reciprocals of two numbers whose sum is 15 and their HCF and LCM is 3 and 18 respectively.

Solution:

Let two numbers be x and y

x + y = 15

xy = HCF × LCM = 3 × 18 = 54

x/{xy}+y/{xy}={x+y}/{xy}

1/y+1/x=15/54

1/x+1/y=5/18

So, the sum of reciprocals of x and y is

5/18
