If the numerator of a fraction is increased by 15% and its denominator be diminished by 8%, the value of the fraction is

Solution:

Let the numerator and the denominator of the fraction is x and y respectively.
According to the statement,

{x+x\of 15%}/{y-y\of 8%}=15/16

⇒{x+(x×15/100)}/{y-(y×8/100)}=15/16

⇒{x+{3x}/20}/{y-{2y}/25}=15/16

⇒{25x}/{20y}=15/16

⇒x/y=3/4

So, the original fraction is

3/4
