The average weight of 35 students in a class is 48 kg. Six of them whose average weight is 42 leave the class and other six students whose average weight is 50 kg join the class. What is the difference in the average weight of the class?

Solution:

Total weight of 35 students = (35 × 48) kg = 1,680 kg
Weight of students who left = (6 × 42) kg = 252 kg
Weight of students who joined = (6 × 50) kg = 300 kg
∴ New average weight

= (1,680 -252 +300)/35\kg

= 49.37 kg
∴ Difference in the average weight = 49.37 kg - 48 kg = 1.37 kg
