John's father was four times as old as John 4 years ago. After 16 years, he will be two times as that of John. What is the average age of John and his father today?

Solution:

Let Sohan’s present age be x years and his father’s present age be y years.
Now, 4 (x - 4) = (y - 4)
⇒ 4x - 16 = y - 4
4x - y = 12 …(1)
Again, 2(x + 16) = y + 16
⇒ 2x + 32 = y + 16
2x - y = -16 …(2)
Solving equation (1) and (2),
4x - y = 12
2x - y = - 16
2x = 28
x = 14
x = 14, y = 44
∴ Present average age

={14+44}/2=29\years
