The average of three numbers is 51. The first number is thrice the second and the second one is four times the third number. Find the highest number.

Solution:

Let the third number be x.
Then second number = 4x
First number = 3 × 4x = 12x

∴{x+4x+12}/3=51

17 = 51 × 3

x = 9

The numbers are 108, 36, 9.
∴ The highest number is 108
