Four numbers are in a proportion. The sum of the squares of the four numbers is 50 and the sum of the mean is 5. The ratio of first two terms is 1 : 3. What is the average of the four numbers?

Solution:

Since the first two numbers are in the ratio 1 : 3
Let first number be 1 and second number be 3
Four numbers are in proportion so The third number and fourth number are 2 and 6 respectively.
Sum of squares of four numbers = 50

1^2+3^2+2^2+6^2=50

Our supposition is correct.
Average of four numbers

= {1+2+3+4}/4=12/4=3
