Some friends planned to contribute equally to jointly buy a CD player. However, two of them decided to withdraw at the last minute. As a result, each of the had to shell out one reupee more than what they had planned for. If the price (in Rs.) of the CD player is an integer between 1000 and 1100, find the number of friends whoa ctually contributed ?

Solution:

Let the number of friends and share of each person be x and v respectively. Then,
Total money

=x×y=xy

According to the question,

(x-2)×(y+1)=xy

⇒xy+x-2y-2=xy⇒x-2y=2

From option (d),

x=46

then,

46-2y=2⇒44=2y

∴y=22

Hence, price of CD player

=46×22=₹1012

(∵₹100 < ₹1012 < ₹1100)
