Let the number be

According to the question,

x+y=42

....(i)

x y=437

.....(ii)
We know that,

(x-y)^{2}=(x+y)^{2}-4 x y

⇒(x-y)^{2}=(42)^{2}-4 × 437

=1764-1748=16

⇒(x-y)^{2}=16
