The sum of two numbers is 184. If one-third of one exceeds one-seventh of the other by 8, find the smaller number.

Solution:

Let numbers are x and y

x+y=184

.....(i)

x/3-y/7=8

⇒{7x-3y}/21=8

⇒{7x-3y}=168

....(ii)

x+y=184]×3

7x-3y=168]×1

3x+3y=552

7x-3y=168

––––––––––––

10x\;\;\;\;\;\;\;\;=720

x=720/10=720

y=184–72=112

∴ Smaller number = 72
