At an election there are two candidates in the contest. The candidate who gets 62% of the votes declared winner by 144 votes. Find the total number of votes polled. Assume that none of the votes polled was invalid.

Solution:

Let the total number of votes polled = x
Percent of votes gets by winner candidate = 62%
Percent of votes gets by looser candidate

= 100 – 62 = 38%

According to question,

(62% – 38%) × x = 144

x={144×100}/24

∴x=600
