A leak in the bottom of a tank can empty the full tank in 6 h. An inlet pipe fills water at the rate of 4 L per min. When the tank is full, the inlet is opened and due to the leak the tank is emptied in 8 h. The capacity of the tank is

Solution:

(2) let the inlet pipe can fill the tank in x h. Then,

1/6-1/x=1/8

⇒

1/x=1/6-1/8=1/24

Therefore, inlet pipe will take 24 h to fill the tank.
Now,
In 1 min inlet pipe fill = 4 L
∴ In 24 h, inlet pipe will fill = 4 x 60 x 24= 5760 L
which is the capacity to tank
