The right to vote is universally recognised as an important ingredient of a vibrant democracy. Our Constitution incorporated universal adult franchise as its cardinal principle. There has been a long standing demand from NRls for a right to vote in India. The issue acquires special significance in the context of a large number of our citizens increasingly migrating to other countries for employment, education, research and business All Indians holding Indian passports should be given the right to vote. Their contribution to India’s development can’t be denied. Many of them pay taxes on property and income here. Giving them voting right will be a logical step towards universal franchise principle.
