The idea of abolishing British monarchy keeps on coming up time and again but, it is about time to consider it seriously. Keeping up the monarchy is an extremely wasteful burden on the British taxpayer. But the issue is not of profit and loss but of the nature of democracy. That an individual should be entitled to such largesse at the public’s expense simply because he or she was born into a particular family is antithetical to the basic tenets of democracy. It demeans the principle of equality when a public official takes oath of loyalty - not to the nation or Constitution but to the Queen. It is shameful that a democratic nation should cling to the vestiges of feudalism. It is high time all this was changed.
