Sapan can stitch a suit in 3 h less time than Shravan. Sapan stitches it alone for 4 h and then Shravan taken over and completes it. If altogether 14 h were required to stitch the suit, how many hours would Shravan take to stitch the same alone?

Solution:

Let time taken by Shravan to stitch the suit be xh.
Then, time taken by Sapan to stitch the suit = (x - 3) h According to the question,

4/{x-3 }+ 10/x =1

⇒ 4x+10x-30=x^2-3x

⇒ x^2-17x+30=x^2-3x

⇒ x^2-17x+30=0

⇒ x={{17±√{(17)^2-4×30}}/2}

={17±√{289-120}}/2

={17±13}/2=30/2=15
