(2) Sum of the present ages of Jia and her father = 38 + 6 = 44 years
Jia’s age 7 years hence = $3\mathit{x}$ years
Her present age = $\left(3\mathit{x}-7\right)$ years
Her father’s age 4 years hence = $8\mathit{x}$ years
His present age = $\left(8\mathit{x}-4\right)$ years
∴ $3\mathit{x}-7+8\mathit{x}-4=44$
⇒ $11\mathit{x}=44+11=55$
⇒ $\mathit{x}=\frac{55}{11}=5$
∴ Jia’s present age = $3\mathit{x}-7$
= $3\times 5-7=8$ years
