The difference between the downstream speed and the upstream speed, of a boat is 10 kmph. If the boat can cover 70 km downstream in 3 hours 30 minutes, what in the speed of the boat in still water? (in kmph)

Validate

Solution:

(1) Speed of current =

1/ 2

(rate downstream – rate upstream)
=

1/ 2 × 10 = 5

kmph.
If the speed of boat in still water be

x

kmph then rate downsteam =

(x + 5)

kmph.
∴

x + 5 = 70/{ 7 /2 }= {70× 2} /7

⇒

x + 5 = 20

⇒

x = 20 – 5 = 15

kmph.
