Two pipes A and B can fill a cistern in 15 hours and 12 hours respectively. Both pipes are opened simultaneously but due to a leakage in cistern it takes 20 minutes more to fill the cistern. What will be the time taken by the leakage to empty the full cistern alone?

Solution:

(5) Part of cistern filled by pipes A and B in 1 hour

= 1 /15+ 1 /12 = {4+ 5} /60

= 9/ 60 =3 /20

∴ Required time =

20/ 3

∴ Time taken due to leakage

=( 20/ 3+ 20/ 60)

21/ 3 = 7

hours
∴ Part of cistern emptiedby leakage in 1 hour =

3/20-1/7

= {21 -20}/ 140= 1/ 140

∴ Required time = 140 hours
