The sum of five consecutive numbers is 20 . What is the sum of first three consecutive numbers?

Solution:

Let the five consecutive numbers be

x-2, x-1, x, x+1, x+2

According to the question,

x-2+x-1+x+x

+1+x+2

=20

5 x =20

x ={20}/{5}=4

Sum of first three numbers

=x-2+x-1+x

=3 x-3=3 ×4-3

=12-3=9
